Kieler Woche
The Kieler Woche has its seeds in a sailing regatta on July, 23th 1882 where 20 yachts were on the Kieler Förde. At that time it was about a race between naval officers and traders, which some time later led to a regatta series with international participation lasting several days. Hereupon the local newspaper created the name "Kieler Woche".
Over the years the Kieler Woche became an international accepted event and also the city got its reputation as the no1 within the international world of sailing sports.
Kiel became scene of two sayling olympics and the Förde is still used as a test track for olympic teams and ships.
Since the Second World War the Kieler Woche's basic idea was supplemented by the Kieler Ratsversammlung (council) by adding the idea of a better international communication and making a contribution to peace and friendship.
Not least for this reason we decided to have our meeting during this event.
One of the Kieler Woche highlights is the windjammer parade, which always takes place on the second Saturday. Within this unique event various tall ships and traditional sailing boats together with smaller sailing boats are on target for the outer fjord. A video of the windjammer parade 2007 can provide you an insight into this spectacle. The video can be found on the official Kieler Woche website.
